Router / Firewall

I am looking for a relative inexpensive router or firewall to monitor all instant messaging on our network. Funding is tight and if anyone knows of any affordable hardware that would be great. I have tried different software to monitor the instant messages but it doesnt seem to be successful on remote computers.
