router/switch port management

We are looking for a piece of software that will give us the ablility to see if something is plugged into that port on a switch/router.We would like to be able to pull it up and tell how many open ports we have left on a switch. We have software that will let us know if a port is active, but it does not tell us if anything is plugged in on both ends. Any suggestions?
