Routers vs Layer 3 Switching

by russellwillis . Updated 23 years, 11 months ago

Hi All,

I’m a 2nd year IT undergrad, presently doing my lan assignment. I’m setting up a 20..30 client lan and envisage setting up high redundancy via 4 meshed layer 3 switches that each have 10 clients & 1 server attached on 10 & 100 Mbps ports respectively. My reading suggests this is a viable way
Client Client
| |10Mbps
| 100Mbps |
Server–L3Switch————L3Switch—–Server
| |
| |100Mbps
Server–L3Switch————L3Switch—–Server
| 100Mbps |
| | 10Mbps Client Client

The idea of my little empire is to localise traffic on the corner segments leaving the 100 Mbps backbone available for intersegment comms. I was going to use routers but a cisco and intel white paper indicates L3 Switches are the best of both worlds. Am I on the right track, suggestions & good links welcome.

Many thanks
