Routing

I am trying to setup an email server running redhat 3. The server has two nics, one with an ip address for the lan, 192.168.1.x range. The other is assigned a public ip address from our isp. I can ping the second nic only from the lan. No connection from anywhere else. I very inexperienced with routing, but I know I am probably missing something stupid. Any help is greatly appreciated.
