Run \cmd problems (not working)

Can anyone offer any advice on a problem i am having? When i open run \ cmd and try to use ping or tacert commands it creates a ” command has encountered a problem and needs to close” message.
My router is set to accept pings and i also get a error report in event viewer stating:
source: application error
category: none
event id: 1000

Any advice is appreciated
