Times are tough in the world of Higer Ed. Our Chancellor cites a study at Iowa State University indicating that $115 annually can be saved for each computer and monitor turned off on weekends and evenings, $58 for each laser printer or FAX machine, and $216 for each copy machine.
Conventional wisdom says that the on-off cycle increases the wear on components and in the long run leads to a shorter life for the computer and monitor.
Given the tight budgets we have3 to live with, the likelyhood of keeping computers on a three-year replacement cycle seems nil.
Will we save money, or in the long run will the wear and tear on the computers out weigh any savings in electricity?
