Search feature & enable parent paths security

I want to post a search feature on our intranet. I found an addin at Microsoft called FrontLook. However for it to work, it requires parent paths to be enabled at the intranet server. For security & audit reasons this can not be done. Even MS says there is a potential security risk by enabling parent paths.

Does anyone know of a search function that does not require this to be done?

If this is such a security risk how do others handle this?
