Security Concerns with Chatting

I am a network administrator for a large company. Recently there has been a concern about chat programs, such as AOL’s IM MSN Messenger, on the users computers and the security risks involved with hackers. Could you shed some light on the subject for me on the “actual” security concerns that I should look at?
