security on windows xp

i am using windows XP professional in my server. All other machines are conncted though the pc and internet is available in all pc.How to control the desktop and and block the unwanted sites from the server ? How to develop the secutity system more efficiantly. If i will stop the update will it create trouble for my PC? Or if i will allow the update will my machine slow down?
