sendmail not sending mail to acct name b

i have pop accts set up in linuxconf with acct name Jim.Bob and full name James Bob. sending to Jim.Bob(acct name) does not work with error user unknown, however sending to James.Bob (full name) does work. why is it matching full name and not acctname for user email address. any ideas
