I happen to have several unused Server 2003 licenses due to a donation and I’d like to use one in conjunction with an Internet content filter.
The 2003 Server will store student logins in Active Directory for the content filter, so it will be an authentication server.
For example: A student wants to access the Internet. They plug in, or connect wirelessly to the student network from their personal machine. The content filter is the gateway, so when they open their browser, they are prompted to login to the filter. They enter their information and then the filter checks with the authentication server, and rejects or denies their request depending on the login.
So, my question: Since the only thing actually using the server is the content filter, do I need a CAL for each student?
Fortunatly, if I do have to buy CALs, I can get student CALs for $1.
Or, can anyone think of a better way to do this? The filter is a St. Bernard Software iPrism 4.x (I’m looking into other LDAP server options)
