Server

Hi, i am currently studying systems development but my course did not cover servers and my final/major project requires me to implement a system with the proposed server specs…the system that i going to implement is a hotel lodging system.
Can anyone give me some guidelines/basics on servers or where i can find them?any help is appreciated.
