setting up network

i’m trying to set up my SUSE Linux to work with my cable modem. This modem assigns me the ip address automatically. In the linux documentation i can’t find any setting which allows automatic ip Address assigning. does anyone know how i can set up mysystem so the ip address is automatically assigned?
