setting up PCI RAID1 on a server with built in raid

by bsit1 . Updated 17 years, 2 months ago

I have already asked here about setting up RAID1 on a new Intel server board using SATA drives but couldn’t do it at upgrade time due to some issues over doing a fresh install at the time. Now I am considering installing a PCI SATA RAID card and converting the single drive to a RAID1 pair of equal size brand model. I have not done this before.

Will the motherboard allow this, I assume it will. Will the PCI RAID setup require a fresh install or will it allow to create the RAID1 pair from what exists on the current single drive? I am suggesting a PCI card as I can not use the motherboard RAID controller without a fresh install which is still not possible for reason I won’t elaborate on here.

Motherboard Intel S3210, CPU Intel Xeon X3220, 4GB RAM, 250GB WD hard drives, OS SBS2003.

Can anyone suggest if this will do what I’m looking for? Any tips and warnings? Can you suggest a reliable PCI SATA RAID card to suit?

Thanks in advance.
