Setup server 2003 with 1 NIC??

by ryan . Updated 18 years, 6 months ago

I am having to setup a PDC on server 2003. I want to do this with only 1 NIC.

Our network is already handing out DHCP IP’s. But I am wanting the new PDC to handle DNS and DHCP.

This is the current output from ipconfig /all from the server.
IP: 192.168.0.146
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
GW: 192.168.0.1
DHCP server: 204.228.228.147
DNS: 192.168.0.2

The adapter on the server is set to DHCP. This is the same output any computer on our network has except for the IP. But I’d like some workstations to be able to join the PDC & get it’s IP’s/DNS served from it (the PDC).

1. Do I leave the servers NIC at obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically?

2. When I am setting up the DHCP server on the new PDC and I’m making the new scope would I set a unique IP range like 192.168.30.10-254?
Do I make a new default gateway like 192.168.30.1? Do I make the parent domain XYZ.local?
Do I set the IP for DNS to something different than what the adapter is using? ie: 192.168.30.2?

3. Anything else I am missing? I basically think I have an issue with how the NIC is setup or with how I have the DNS & DHCP rolls setup.

Currently I can go to a workstation and change it to be a member of the domain and it asks for username & password. After entering the info it takes awhile to display this error.
“The following error occurred attempting to join the domain “testpdc”:
The specified server cannot perform the requested operation.”

Thanks!
