sharing files thru a vpn between buildings, can it be done

i need to connect a terastation from 1 building a block away. I do not know how a vpn works. I can connect a vpn, i think i am doing it right, it says connected when i do it but i can’t see any files on the computer i connect to. Do you have to use software to do this?
