Shorted Keyboard

A short on the ps2 connector of a Microsoft internet keyboard was suspected to be the cause that damage an Asus A7M motherboard and its Thunderbird 1.4 Athlon procesor. Is it wise to test the cpu in a new motherboard and the supected damaged motherboard with a new cpu?. I am afraid that I can spread the damage to the new components. I won’t go any further untill I get some advice.
