Slow Computer Performance

i have a Windows XP Home Ed, with 512MB ram and no spyware/virus
problems. my com is still running very slowly and i keep on getting
disconnected from the internet, i have just fixed my prob with my hdd
drive showing lesser amt of space then its supposed to show
