Smart Phones and PADs

Now with all these iPAD and other 7+ inch gadgets abound, should we still purchase Smart Phones with their expensive $20+ P/M data plans?

Related: Should we purchase Unlocked Cell phones and use net based apps only where WIFI is available or, buy the phone from major carriers with a 2 yr lock on the contract and $20 / month data plan?
