Hi chaps, this is a machine I was building yesterday, and I am still shaky from the experience…
Pentium 4 2.8c
Gigabyte GA-8KNXP (875P Cnaterwood)
Corsair TwinMX PC3200 2x512MB
Creative Soundlbaster Audigy
Sapphire Radeon 9700 Pro Ultimate3x Maxtor UDMA100/133 (40+60+80 Gb)
1x Zip100 IDE
1x floppy
1x Plextor 24x CD-RW
1x Samsung 16x DVD-ROM
Antec 550 TruePower PSU
After triple checking all connections I fired up the syste, and within 10 seconds there was billowing smoke coming out of the case. The immediately identifiable culprit appears to be the floppy, which 10 min. before was working in the P3 it was cannibalized from. The power cable to the floppy melted, taking out the floppy connector (two middle pin’s and plasticmelted only – the two female pins on the cable to the right melted only surprisingly enough), the floppy itself (melteds solders and burned tracks on the PCB) and severely damaging the power cable to the zip100 upstream. I’ve thrown away both Zip and floppy, but not the DVD attached upstream. That works fine (reads CD’s). It looks to me like I might’ve missed the right-most pin on the floppy when connecting the power cable.

Is the PSU safe to use after this shorting or shall I try to RAM it?
Thanks in advance for the help….
