SMS access and/or Server Manager problem

by daniel c. . Updated 23 years, 3 months ago

Hi, here is my setup

one NT 4.0 server SP6a PDC
NT 4.0 workstations and Win2k pro computers are on a domain network.
SMS 2.0 is loaded (patched to latest) on the server and the clients are loaded on the workstations.

The problem is that some computers on the SMS query list exhibit a “credential required” message when one tries to run the remote control tool in SMS. Other computers on the same domain do not have this problem.

when I go into server manager, all the workstations are greyed out. If I try to double click on an affected computer, I get an “access denied” message. The computers that don’t have the SMS problem is ok in server manager, even though it is also greyed out.

Here is what I have already tried:
1) restarted all SMS services
2) uninstall/reinstall the SMS client on the affected computers
3) take computer out of domain; delete computer name in server manager. bring computer back into domain.
4) resynched entire domain in server manager.

nothing has worked so far.

I believe a former virus infection might have caused this. However, the network is now free of any virus. Your help is appreciated.
