Solaris 6,7

How do you change the IP address on a NIC card while the server is up and make it PERMANENT?? Note: I tried ifconfig, etc/hosts,etc/inet/hosts (hard link to etc/host) but when the server reboots it goes back to the original configuration.. The only thing that works is the sys-unconfig but this is unacceptable.. Thanks
