sound card distribution problem

Hi
When I play a music CD, I have to plug my external speakers into the headphone jack of my cd-rom to hear it. I use CD PLAYER and Media Player. They are working but NO SOUND to the rear sound card speaker connection. It should send it to the rear sound card jack, right?
The only sound sent to the rear jack is the windows chimes and schemes. Would appreciate help with this.
