Speaker sound problems

Compaq MV540 monitor w/side mounted speakers. Suddenly has loud hissing sound that muffles all other system/cd audio. Moved scard to other slot, reinstalled and updated drivers, even did clean reinstall of Win98 os. What could the problem be? Is itthe scard itself, how would I know for sure? Any help will be appreciated.
