SQL 2000 server/ODBC

Hello. I have installed SQL server 2000 personal edition on a desktop PC to establish a local SQL server for databases connecting via ODBC data source. When I attempt to SQL server verify authenticity of the databases login id, it tells me “connection failed”…SQL server error 11001…SQL server error:6 I attempted to work with the vendor who provided my company with this s/w and advised that sql server 2000 needs to be used, but, have no idea as to how it should be set up??
