SQL Error

We are seeing an unusual error occur. We have SQL server 2000 but whoever installed it (before my time here) seems to have installed in multiple locations, reinstalling it and not removing all the files. My problem is that while trying to update SQL to the newest version it will not take the Service Pack. anyone have any sugestions on what I can do to get this SP to install properly.
