SSD vs SAS, FC , NL

I frequently see comparisons between SSD and SAS, FC , NL.
However, I believe SSD is the hardware type of the disk and SAS, FC, NL are protocols used/software.
Kindly clarify if SAS, FC are device types or just the protocols. Detailed explanation would be much helpful.
