Starting own IT business need some pointers

by dave . Updated 20 years, 7 months ago

For those of you who have started your own IT business, can I please pick your brains a bit?

Hello everyone. I’ve started my own IT consulting company. I have all the bs set up – the corporate bank account, the credit card processing, the name, the LLC, pretty much everything. Just finished business cards and I’m currently working on the web site. Going to make flyers, run a few ads and start taking on work soon.

I plan to start with fixing computers, building/setting up small networks, etc. Then I will move on to things like custom software development (I’m a developer by trade), device drivers, etc. hopefully building this thing along the way, hiring some employees, etc.

This project is funded entirely from my pocket, so I have to keep things cheap in order to get this off the ground.

I would love to hear stories about how you got your business going, the pitfalls you inevitably encountered, and stuff you didn’t think about along the way. For instance, how did you get your first clients? what is the best method to track your clients and their bills/invoices/etc.? What did you do to market your company initially?

I know my question is pretty broad. But please help out a fellow entrepreneur here. Share your stories and tell me how to get it right the first time 🙂

Also, if this type of thing has been discussed here before I apologize – please post a link.

Many thanks,
Dave Atkinson
