strange error message on laptop

on bootup, get error msg “invalid hibernation partition/file. run hdprep”

when I bootup with win98 startup floppy, cannot see the cd drive to load drivers. once utilities loaded to D drive, cannot scandisk C drive – cannot see HD. Sounds as though HD dead, but I am curious about hibernation partition and hdprep – any suggestions?
