Sub-Interface

Why is Sub-Interfacing is use in configuring a router? What is the purpose for this? For example, I have 1 serial port named Serial 0/0 and our Network admin used the configurationi and named it Serial 0/0.2. Why is that?

I’m just new in Cisco router configuration. Could you please help me.
