Subnet a subnet?

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help with a query? Can you subnet a subnet? I’ve trying to configure a network and have to work out subnets needed. Part of the information I have says a network must be further sub-networked to allow more users/networks. I’m slightly confused by this.
