I’m currently working on organizing our company network. The net admin has given me the task of developing a scheme to separate our network traffic. He would like each of our 20 departments to have their own grouping (For example 192.168.1.XXX for one department and 192.168.2.XXX for another) We currently run a class c subnetted to a class b (255.255.0.0) and run a 192.168.XXX.XXX(pc) and a 172.16.XXX.XXX(voip)and a 10.1.29.XXX(future expansion) network.
First question, I’ve been looking at the idea of subnetting, but I’m confused with how to separate the departments using a class b subnet on a class c network.
Second question, is there a way to not have to assign IP addresses statically and still have departments separated into groupings or ranges Dynamically on Windows network servers?
My premise is if there is a way for the DNS server to recognize a pc name and then tell DHCP which range to allow the pc to grab from.
If you’re confused by reading this, I’m sorry, but it’s even more confusing in my head.
