i have an Windows 2003 box with 2 NICs which i want to use in the following network topology:
ADSL MODEM
|
|
CISCO ROUTER – 10.0.0.1
| (10.0.0.x network)
|
WINDOWS 2003 – 10.0.0.2/192.168.16.1
|
| (192.168.16.x network)
CISCO SWITCH
/ | \
/ | \
PC1 PCn MAILSERVER
my question is about NAT address translation for mailserver behind the Windows 2003 box.
if i set NAT in router [it won’t know anything about 192.168 network] – does that mean i address all traffic for ports 25 (SMTP) and 143 (IMAP) to 10.0.0.2 (Win 2K3 server) ?
or what should be set in Windows 2003 box in this case?
i’m stuck having difficluty in making a decision whether to set Windows 2003 box before switch (for better security) or simply move it behind the switch along with other local network machines. any advices?
many thanks for your quick response
Alex
