Suspect HDD Failure

by autry . Updated 23 years, 3 months ago

This is a odd one. After shutting down my pc for a few days for non-use, and rebooting yesterday, I experienced the following errors suspecting a failed HDD.

Factors: W2K Pro, Nortons Utilities, Western Digital 40gb HDD.

Rebooted > HDD error found as SMART capabilities has been made somehow disabled? – had to use default settings > got into windows.

Ran Nortons disk drive (NDD) utilities with an (undescribed) error on HDD, suggested to run NDD32 file or select fix > restarted NDD withauto fix enabled.

In order to run the “fix” had to reboot > rebooted into black screen with HDD activity light going off and the floppy (FDD) light steady green and a beep ever 30-seconds, and unable to reboot or shutdown machine.

I suspect a failing drive, but the HDD is about 4-months old. Is there a way to recover my HDD, or what else may be going on that I am missing?

Any feedback welcome. Thanks and Happy Holidays!
