System Administrator wanting to go in to Network Security

Career Move Question
I’ve only been in It for 7 years, but have moved up rather quick, starting as a pc tech and moving up to a network admin before I shifted gears and became a systems admin.

However I’m finding that network security is what really interests me. routers firewalls and anything associated with that.

My problem is an old one. I would like to focus on the “network” side of IT and I have some experience with cisco routers checkpoint firewall and layer 3 switches from my job as a network admin. BUT

How do you get in that part of It without solid experience/how do you get experience without being in that field.

I’ve gotten my CCNA a few years ago which I need to renew and am working on my MCSE.

I don’t feel like I’m gaining any knowledge as a system admin or better yet any overall network knowledge that makes me feel that I am moving forward.

I would really love to be in network security. Any thoughts? suggestions?
