Take PMP Exam Prep Course?

Does anyone have an educated opinion on whether the PMP exam preparation courses are of any value to experienced project/program managers? While some of our project/program managers have many years of successful experiences, they will not have the official designation of PMP until they pass the exam. What do you recommend? Should they take a prep course first or simply read the PMBOK? Should they use prep book(s) instead?
