TCP/IP – multiple adapters in use

I have heard that running more than one TCP/IP adapter at a time can cause unusual software results (for example, dialup adapter to the internet via modem while running an application on my internal LAN).

I have heard that this is an inherit fault of Windows 9X, but I have been unable to find actual hard documentation on this issue. Can someone either elaborate further or point me in the right direction?
