Tech Perspective: Natural language study

When can you expect speech capabilities to be incorporated into personal devices? Microsoft is actively pursuing voice recognition research and development, but don’t expect to be able to talk to your PDA anytime soon. According to Gartner, while Microsoft is making strides, NL speech capabilities won’t become a practical reality on personal devices before 2006.

How do you think NL speech capabilities will affect your future? Do you see this as a “must-have” feature or a “would-be-nice” addition? How would voice recognition help you do your job? What applications do you currently have for implementing voice recognition software? What needs to happen before you more fully implement voice recognition systems?
