Cisco has begun promoting IP and Gigabit Ethernet as viable alternatives to Fibre Channel for enterprise data storage. Traditionally, Cisco customers have been uncertain as to whether they’d be able to extend the investments they’d made in Cisco-powered networks to storage area networks (SANs). But now Cisco has announced that it will extend its Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology to SANs over metropolitan area networks (MANs).
