telnet settings

I’m telnetting from my win2k workstation to a corellinux workstation and I can’t figure out how to get my terminal settings right.
-When in vi I can’t see the : prompt when exiting vi. I just have to go on instinct.
-I also can’t backspace.
Alsocan’t log in as root remotely. I get incorrect login message. I know password is correct.
