The best AntiVirus program?

I’ve read reviews & used many antivirus programs in DOS, Win3, 95, 98 & ME. Is there such a thing as the ‘best’? The reviews only mention the power to detect/ correct most virus’s. I’d like to have a bootable 1.44 mb diskette around that can detect/ disempower the most common virus, not the most exotic/ most unusual virus. Is there such a program?

Alternately, I’d like some way of using a harddisk that can give me enough time to detect/ nullify the dangerous virus, so that I’d have time/space to then destroy the virus at my leisure. Often as a pc support person, I’m called in to remove irus attack on foreign pc’s.

Is this possible?
