thunderstorms and system failure

Is it true that if the PC is connected to the internet via modem and there’s a sudden lighting that flashed in the sky, the system may fail?

It happened to me. I was connected to the net one stormy night and then after a sound of thunder my PC has bogged down. Then I found out that my mother board, hard disk and modem have failed. How does it happened? Please help me…
