To Proxy or not to Proxy

I’ve heard for a long time now if you want to share an internet connection get a router. People always saying get a router, they are good but. I’ve just read about Proxy servers and I think that should be the way to go for ICS. What would be the best way. I’m thinking Both or is that a smart idea? Tell me what you think?
