Tracking Network/Server lag

by elrico-fantastica . Updated 18 years, 11 months ago

Hi,

In my company we currently have a network issue i am trying to pinpoint and wondered what the best diagnostic methods would be.

The issue comes and goes but basically we have patches where network access, specifically to files shares seems to grind to unusable speeds.

When the problem is active entire departments cannot access their departmental shares although usinf perfmon on the servers in question doesnt show high disk reads or writes.

also from other machines i seem to be able to browse the internet and access the drives on the servers.

I was wondering what methods you chaps would use to trace where the fault is occuring? i am at a loss as to what the fault could be.

im guessing a routing/switching error but dont know how to go about proving any theorys, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
