My son wanted an Ipod Nano for Xmas. Knew several people with them and they have no problems. We got him one. Plugged it into the USB port and with in 10 seconds our computer locked up. Took it back to the store…. they checked it… they could not recognize it either. So we got another one. Got it home, plugged it in… it went 3 minutes and locked up the computer. Reboot… back to locking up with in 10-15 seconds. Open device manager before plugging it in. Plug it in, see “unknown device” show up in the USB list… then device manager just keeps refreshing every couple of seconds while trying to recognize the ipod. Disable the device and it stops. Enable, system says new hardware found, unknown device, says it is ready to use then locks up. We have taken it to friends, I taken it to work and hooked it to an XP pro, and W2K machine, they all see it no problems. I have updated everything on our XP Home machine. The only difference from the other machines I have tested the nano on and our home machine is the test machines were either XP pro or W2k pro. However, one test machine was an XP home machine. Our 10 year old’s 512Mb RCA mp3 player works fine. We also had this same issue with a 1Gb Mp3 player which we just returned because it was Wal-Mart brand and you get what you pay for. We then upgraded to the 2Gb Ipod Nano (still $200) instead of getting the $300 Ipod. Does anyone have any clue what the problem could be. Have spoken with Apple support and at this point I agress… it is something with our computer.
