Problem:
I wanted to rebuild a server using larger hard drives. I purchased 2 IBM drives; 250GB SATA II and inserted both into the machine and connected to an Adaptec 1420SA SATA II RAID controller. When both drives are connected, only one drive shows up in the configuration utility (as JBOD). Obviously with only 1 disk available to the RAID Controller, I am unable to create a new RAID 1 array using the new 250GB disks. If I insert the old 80GB drives back in, both drives in the array are recognized and boots without a problem. I’m not sure why both 250GB drives won’t post to the RAID controller to allow me to create a new array. The drives are both SATA II and I have switched the cables and the connection respectively for each drive to ensure that one of the drives and/or cables isn’t faulty.
I have also connected only 1 of the new drives to the RAID controller to single out for a bad drive. In each event (two drives or testing each drive individually) only 1 drive will post to the RAID configuration as JBOD. Any thoughts?
Current Hardware Info: IBM xServer 206. 3.0Ghz CPU, 1GB RAM, Adaptec 1420SA RAID Controller. (2) 80GB SATA I drives (1.5GBps I believe) in a RAID 1 configuration. Both drives healthy other than 80% full.
