I have an NT 4 Terminal Server with SP6. It’s got a SuperMicro DBE dual processor board that is supposed to support up to 1gb of RAM. It had two 128mb pc100 DRAM chips in it, and I needed to expand the memory.
I bought two 512mb chips and put them in, after removing the previous two chips. POST reported 384mb. I took one out, POST reported 128mb. Took it out and put the other in. POST reported 128mb. I upgraded the BIOS to the latest revision. Same behavior. I read that this motherboard willonly support up to 1gb in two 512mb EDO chips or four 256mb pc100 chips.
I took the 512mb chips back and got three 256mb pc100 chips instead. I put them in, and POST recognized all 768mb. My system continued booting, got into kernel mode (blue screen section of boot-up), and kernel mode reported 2 processors and 768mb memory. After a few seconds though, kernel mode changed its mind and showed only 256mb of memory. When the OS came up, only 256mb of memory was reported in the system control panel. I restarted the system, changed the BIOS to enable ‘SDRAM Autosize’ (was set to ‘auto’ before) and rebooted. During POST (or was it kernel?) memory was only 512mb of memory was recognized, but that figure was constant all the way into the OS.
Just to find out what would happen, I turned AutoSize off and added another 128mb chip in slot 4, and when the system came up, even the BIOS only reported 256mb, even though around 900mb was currently installed.
At this point 512mb is better than 256mb was, but since I have 768mb I’d like to use, I’d like the OS to see it. Does anyone know what some possible causes for this might be and how to fix this?
