I have a rather odd problem. I left dial-up a few months ago to use Comcast Cable Internet. Big mistake! The cable is down all the time. So I am trying to go back to dial-up until I have more options than Comcast or when DSL is available.
The dial-up can do the handshake; verify username and password; registering computer on the network; I see bytes sent and received. I can ping yahoo.com and receive replies.
Yet the instance I try to use my I.E. 7.0 browser to access yahoo.com, I get a “page can’t be displayed” and I can’t ping anymore. It seems that the browser is trying to use the DNS of the cable modem, even though I have disabled the LAN card.
What I know isn’t the problem:
1. I have had the line checked. No faults.
2. I am able to connect to the ISP with my laptop not my desktop (which has the cable modem). The same phone number, username and account, and phone jack. It works just fine. I can browse and ping.
3. I have run ipconfig /flushdns
4. I have disabled the LAN when I have dialed the ISP.
I know this must be an easy solution but I can?t figure it out. Thanks for any help.
