Turn on Windows XP Firewall

by rovoco . Updated 17 years ago

A client has a Compaq Presario running Windows XP-SP3. It was infected with viruses and spy-ware and has been cleaned. I cannot get the Windows firewall to turn on. Have tried the MS Onecare Firewall Repair Tool and MS Fix It with no success. The PC had Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition at one time and it still appears in the add/remove programs listing. Attempts to remove it fail. It does not appear anywhere else. The client does not have the XP installation disk and I do not want to do a clean install of XP-SP3, due to the lack of any Compaq drivers. The other Aps seem to work fine. Short of telling him to buy a new PC,
which I really don’t want to do, I’m stumped.
Is there a freeware personal firewall that would allow me to tell Windows I’m using something else and to stop the warnings? Any
assistance would be greatly appreciated.
