TV compatible with external HDD?

Hello,

I’ve got a Panasonic Viera TV which has an USB-port at the side of it. Is it possible to plug-in an external HDD and watch movies or listen to music from the HDD? Which file-types should that be? AVI and MP3 or more specialized file-types?
